Chapter 10

Braskar listened to the group discussing builds, staying silent. While he had undertaken numerous days and years of training for his people, leading them in days and nights of sweat and blood and practise, it was a different thing, these buildings. There were no rousing speeches, no trips to nearby villages or long conversations with mothers and fathers and clan chiefs to draw forth new volunteers for the army.

No children to decline from coming too, no tear-filled meetings when he had to report on the deaths and losses of his people, not even their fangs returned. So, he was happy enough with the results, happy not to have to explain why he had not managed to save their sons or daughters this time.

It still didn’t mean he wanted to get into endless conversations about what buildings were best to build. He had done it early on, but with Yiis and Irvine taking part, and sometimes even Boudica, he was grateful to do what he did best: harass and kill his opponents.

Now, he had the army to do so, even if he had to punch his way through numerous units. He barely let his people slow down, marching right over the single units, pushing his own in a way that he could feel was straining the credulity of this world’s rules.

Then again, he was more and more realising that was the point of the Heroes. They were here to break the rules, to push what was a rigid system into a flexibility that almost mimicked the real world.

Once more, he approached an enemy city, that strange mixture of domed buildings and jutting, jagged edifices. Familiar though he might be with the previous town, he still found the buildings that created the croftu strange.

That massive stone building where drones moved back and forth, dumping trash and bodies within, tumbling vats and sacks out the other side. Containers that decanted mostly empty slurry with the occasional mutant stumbling forth.

Lightning Towers with coils of metal reaching into the sky were next to the Creation Ponds filled with slurry that was so viscous that he dared not drink from it. Always sparking in the early hours of morning and evening when the occasional cloud swept through, lightning dancing between the towers while sacs of half-formed figures struggled in the ponds.

There was a single building with mirrors criss-crossing the exterior and pointing inward. No figures emerged from it, not right now, but he wondered what might come from that place. What new horror was birthed within. The croftu might be cheap and plentiful and decent soldiers, but they were wrong too, unnatural in a way that caused Braskar to shudder to even think about.

If he had a choice, he would raze the buildings to the ground and call forth some proper soldiers. But that was not his call. Not his Lord’s either, as they were trapped.

Trapped, just like the army units, the swarm in the wall-less town before him, units of disposable croftu crawling all along alleyways.
